POLLUTANTS voc

ACTIVE AND PASSIVE SMOKING

It is a very common VOC, whose main source in outdoor air is motor vehicle petrol.

Smokers in or near a room are sources of indoor pollution. Tobacco smoke is a mixture that contains 4000 different chemical compounds, in the gaseous phase or in the particulate which is released by combustion. Many of these compounds are irritating, toxic, carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic. Active smoking and passive smoking (breathed by non-smokers who still live in a room where a smoker lights a cigarette) are equally harmful.

Very often, ventilating the room where you smoke, can only reduce the smell of smoke.

Health effects

Active and passive smoking are classified as carcinogenic to humans (group 1) by the World Health Organization through the IARCsup. Some of its components are also certain carcinogens, first of all benzene. Smoking can cause:

  1. Tumors
  2. Cardiovascular and respiratory diseases
  3. Aging and aesthetic problems
  4. Deterioration of brain functions
  5. Taste and smell alteration

Measures to reduce exposure

Smoke

Carcinogens produced by cigarette smoke stagnate indoors.

Environments

Nicotine can combine with indoor pollutants and give rise to potent carcinogens, such as nitrosamines
